Astellas Pharma Associate Director, Commercial Finance, US Expense Lead in Northbrook, Illinois

Astellas is announcing an Associate Director, Commercial Finance US Expenses Lead in Northbrook, IL.

Purpose & Scope:

This position ensures expenses are properly planned and reported, and inputs to P&L's are prepared and properly allocated, while bringing transparency to the process and ensuring efficient allocation of resources to the business. This requires very strong finance and partnering skills.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Coordinate expense-planning processes of the market.

Provide guidance for resource allocation of key therapeutic areas and brands.

Partner with owners of P&L line items Sales Force, A&P, Market Access, Market Research, Co-Promotion, S&M Admin and G&A.

Coordinate expense-planning process for APUS in accordance with global timelines and templates. Develop and maintain expense-planning tools and capture plan input at cost center level.

Direct FP&A activities like month-end accounting close, variance analysis, preparation of managerial and statutory reports. Champion P2P process. Review intercompany charges. Lead preparation of comprehensive financial reports, including KPIs, co-promotion reports, operating statements, cost center expense reports and headcount reports.

Support resource allocation decisions in collaboration with Marketing and Insights & Analytics business partners. Build analytical capabilities, increase transparency on strategic investments and provide insights to senior management.

Seek continuous improvements to Commercial Finance processes through process design, automation, improved communications, training and sharing of best practices.

Coordinate expense analysis for one-off projects. Identify and implement value-enhancing activities related to the brands and therapeutic areas.

Adapt and develop ERP system to ensure alignment of planning and reporting at process and master data level.

Interface with ERTT and external auditors to ensure expense accruals are correct.

Build cohesive, high-performing Commercial Finance Expenses team while managing performance, organization design, and career development.

  • Embed Compliance Culture, ensuring Integrity in Action is actively applied in all initiatives and proactively address non-compliance

  • Ensure adherence to Astellas policies relating to healthcare compliance standards and interactions with Healthcare Professionals (HCPs), Healthcare Organizations (HCOs) and Patient Organizations (POs)

  • Ensure adherence to Astellas policies relating to Finance Controls and Compliance standards.

  • Ensure a culture of Ethics and Compliance; lead by example and incorporate cross-cultural perspectives when addressing challenging situations

Partnering Overall:

  • Provides senior level financial and business advice to stakeholders through effective partnerships, useful analyses, and by constructively challenging proposals so Astellas can meet its overall goals effectively.

  • Provides key stakeholders with accurate, timely financial information to support decision making, and enabling compliance with policies, regulations, and laws.


  • Evaluation of investment proposals and formulation of recommendations for management to maximize return on investment

  • Direct key business initiatives, identifying opportunities to streamline processes and procedures within his/her remit, driving approved initiatives to completion

  • Act as a catalyst in driving initiatives to deliver the strategy and results

  • Articulate financial risks and opportunities and drive post-investment appraisal of business initiatives within his/ her remit

Planning and Budgeting:

  • Responsible for implementing the planning processes within the remit of the role, in alignment with the global process

  • Lead the budgeting process across his/her remit, including target setting, challenging the relevant leads, and ensuring realistic budgets

  • Drive the forecasting process, effectively highlighting risks and opportunities, allowing the business to create value through adjustments and reallocations of investments

  • Support effective business performance management, including working with the Finance Business Partnering teams to set appropriate (and standardized where possible) KPIs, reporting and challenging the business to improve results, grow profits and create sustainable value

  • Leverage business knowledge and relationships to effectively support and challenge business performance and Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting

Organizational Context:

Member of the US Commercial Finance organization within the Global Commercial Finance organization. The position reports into the Executive Director, US Commercial Finance and is peer to the Head of FP&A & Revenue Recognition, US Brand support and Revenue Operations.



Minimum Qualification

  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance
  • English professional level in speaking and writing

Minimum Experience

  • Work experience in planning and budgeting
  • Experience in people management
  • Solid experience in planning and budgeting
  • Solid working knowledge of accounting and internal control standards
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and planning tools
  • Proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint
